MissionThe Trail Conference is in the beginning phases of a complete redesign of our web pages. To achieve this we need a large number of volunteers in several categories. All of these will be team members for the effort. From the description below you will see that we have very ambitious goals to make us the number one site for all things hiking related in the area and perhaps the world. Core committeeA core group chaired by the webmaster and consisting of:
will make the final decisions of what gets implemented and how. Content ProvidersThese people with have full responsibility for some particular content area. Some of these will be staff members or a volunteer working with a staff member. A subset of this group will be photographers who either find or take pictures to illustrate particular pages. One goal is to make the website our primary communications mechanism so that most items appear first on the web and then are summarized in the Trail Walker.
TestersThese people will test the usability and proper functioning of site. We need volunteers with a range of abilities from beginner to expert, young to older. Color blind or visually impared people are welcome. The work will start from the availability of our earliest prototypes and continue through launch. These are a short term but possibly intense project. An on going need for testers is people who use particular browsers as their default and who will report browser specific problems, e.g Internet Explorer (older versions), Netscape, FireFox, Opera, Safari, etc. Programmers/TechniciansThe site will be designed using a Content Management System based on MySQl and PHP (probably Drupal). There will be liberal use of AJAX tools (Javascript). Thus people with PHP and/or Javascript are needed for the team. Some of the features that we want to implement will need special purpose modules written to provide the required functionality, e.g. a database driven trail locator for hikers. Some content will come from RSS feeds (and we will supply outgoing feeds to others). We need an RSS expert. Graphics DesignersThere are three types of designers needed, those who have the big picture and prototype the overall layout and template, those who work with CSS to implement this layout, and photoshop experts who produce graphical images. We also anticipate heavy use of maps on the site so cartographic experience is desirable. ModeratorsOne design goal is community building. This means that the site will have forums, blogs, and the ability to comment on many pages. All such areas need moderators to keep then free of spam and on topic. Mailing list managerWe anticipate heavy use of mailing lists, collected from the web or offline sources. These will be used for coordinating volunteers on many committees as well as advocacy. Such lists need active maintenance to keep them current. Poll/survey managerWe anticipate using polls and surveys to find out how hikers feel about various issues. These require a special writing skill in order to get valid results. [How many bad surveys have you taken?] EditorsNot all of the above people are skilled writers and writing for the web is different from writing for paper publications. You will help most of the above improve their presentation and fix ones that do get posted with problems. InterestedWeb Design Tools |
