      • Hiking the Jersey Highlands offers detailed guides to 33 hikes in the rugged Highlands from Big Beech Mountain at the New York state border to Point Mountain near the southern end of the chain. Sections on history, geology, plant communities, and birds and other animals will introduce urban and suburban walkers to this wilderness in their backyard. The hikes are graded from starters for first-timers to challenges for experienced hikers. From these hikes metro area walkers can discover for themselves why their government and private conservationists have combined to preserve the forests and lakes of this exciting geological formation. A special section will describe the 100-mile Highlands Trail, New Jersey's Millenium Trail, divided into day-hike segments. Due out in Spring 2006. By George Petty.
